I have windows Vista installed on my laptop and I never had any serious problems with the operating system itself. I had some minor issues with McAfee av which came pre-installed with the laptop, but in general, I like the OS. I also have 2 desktops with XP installed. I had a lot of pain while upgrading to WinXP sp3, but upgrading my laptop to Vista SP1 was very easy! Most of the problems which people face in day to day life with vista is because of an incompatible driver or a pretty old piece of hardware.
Coming to the title of the post, the perception people gave in general about Vista is, "It is a buggy OS", "It is very unstable", "It will not run my applications properly" etc., etc., People will have to understand something: "Change". Are they expecting the PC's like the first desktop I had, 32 MB Ram, 256 MHz Processor, 2 GB HDD , which was originally designed to run windows 98, to run Vista? Common, give me a break. 4 years back, you wont need 1 GB RAM for bare browsing, but now, You need atleast 1 GB ram to just browse the internet. This is no joke, Regardless of browser you have, when you are broswing the internet, you need that much amount of RAM to properly render the web pages. So, what is their problem??
People have a misconception from Apple's ads that Vista is bad. So, they are reluctant to buy vista. What Microsoft did for thsi Mojave experiment was, they selected people from different age groups. Fist they were asked about their opinion about Vista. Everybody gave negative comments despite the fact that they have never used Vista before. Then they were shown a new operating system called "Mojave", and they were demonstrated about the feature of the new operating system like Windows gadgets, Windows media center, System Restore options, Aero theme etc., Then they were asked to give feedback. Surprisingly, all of them gave positive feedback ! and they even told the study organizers whether they can get this OS for money somehow etc., Very funny, as a matter of fact, they all were shown a demo of Vista and it's features! So, when they don't see the name "Vista" in the OS, they think that it is the best operating system they have ever owned.
Now I will have to talk a few words about the apple's Damn Operating system. It is in early early "adaptive" phase. Even though apple ships the operating system in it's own piece of hardware, it still has HARDWARE INCOMPATIBILITIES. It will not detect some printers, it will refuse to do a file sharing with other os's. And last but not least, it has lot more bugs than ever. It also has a hell lot of security vulnerabilities. You know the reason, Apple doesn't know which direction they are going. They have dedicated most of their resources to iPhone development , iPod development etc., and to my opinion, They are not doing good in OS innovations as they did before in 1980's and 1990's.
My friend, who bought a Mac book air, now regretting his decision. He is even trying to sell the damn computer on eBay, but nobody is ready to buy it unless for a ridiculously low price. Overall Macbook air is a good computer, it has a decent battery life of about 25 minutes, it doesen't have a DVD player, perfomance is top on the low end laptops, WOW! Apple is following what we call "Defacement Marketing". It is one of the industry recognized unethical marketing technique, which involves defacing competitors product for improving own sales. Apple's famous PC vc MAC ads lineup is an example for this.
There are certain things we will have to learn from Microsoft's Mojave Experiment: People will believe whatever they hear on TV/internet. If you tell the same lie several times, people will accept that it a truth.
